Parrot by Pagos truly is an unmatched BIN data service. Through a single integration with the Parrot API, you’ll have access to detailed, up-to-date bank and market data for payments cards issued all over the world. Prefer a file-based system for ingesting and integrating BIN data into your payments infrastructure? We support that, too, with Parrot Batch! For more information about the many uses of Parrot’s BIN data and the ways it can augment any payments data analyses, see our Pair It With Parrot blog or BIN/IIN Data guide.

In today’s blog, we're excited to announce a significant upgrade to this powerful payment intelligence tool! Parrot is now spreading its wings even wider to include direct access to BIN data from two new key networks: EFTPOS in Australia and Cartes Bancaires in France. These additions mark a significant step in our commitment to providing merchants with the most comprehensive and accurate BIN data available.

Unlike other BIN data providers, Parrot goes direct to local networks like EFTPOS and Cartes Bancaires for data, meaning we have access to all eligible issuers and card products across all channels. This ensures our BIN data isn’t limited to only those BIN ranges that are enabled for ecommerce, have had a recent transaction, or are co-branded with the major networks. For a full list of the card brands Parrot provides BIN data for, see our Parrot documentation.

Understanding Local Payment Networks

Before diving into the significance of these new data sources, let's take a moment to appreciate the role of local payment networks. Long before the era of global transactions, payments were deeply rooted in local commerce. In many countries, these local networks were the bridges that connected banks, enabling seamless transactions between consumers and merchants.

Much like US debit networks, local payment networks such as EFTPOS and Cartes Bancaires have always sought to stand out against big, global card brands (e.g. Visa, Mastercard, etc). They differentiate themselves with pricing, performance, and the extent of their coverage in local markets. As such, they provide alternative ways of processing transactions, usually at its own unique cost, performance, and risk profile.

Why should you, as a merchant, care about these local payment networks? The answer is simple: in the world of card payments, understanding the issuing bank and network on a payment can make a world of difference. If you’re on a quest to optimize your  payment processing, this valuable card data can be the key to fighting fraud, cutting costs, and improving overall performance.

Opportunities Await

Let's explore some of the opportunities that these expanded data sources bring to the table:

  • Reaching More Customers: With EFTPOS and Cartes Bancaires data at your fingertips, you can identify opportunities to reach more customers. For instance, you may discover untapped segments of EFTPOS prepaid cardholders that aren't co-branded, opening new avenues for engagement.

  • Saving on Costs: Leveraging local payment networks can often lead to cost savings. Different networks come with varying fee structures, and understanding these differences can help you make cost-effective routing decisions.

  • Boosting Revenue: It's not just about cost; it's about revenue too! By intelligently routing payments through networks that align with your business goals, you can boost authorization rates and improve conversion, ultimately raising your bottom line.

  • Delighting Customers: To best support and cater to your customers, you must understand their designed payment options. Tailoring your offerings based on their preferred payment networks can significantly impact customer satisfaction and brand loyalty. Engaged customers are happy customers!

Of course, implementing these strategies is just the first step. The key is to track and measure the outcomes. Are your routing choices translating into the desired authorization boost? Is conversion on the rise for targeted card types or brands? Did processing with local networks directly improve performance initially and over time? Is your risk of chargebacks under control? These are critical questions that require continuous monitoring and adjustment—a task Pago’s Peacock and Canary products can help you with!
