Platforms Need More Than PSP Dashboards

We write a lot about companies "flying blind" without payment data visibility. It's a common problem we hold near and dear to our hearts—so much so, we designed Pagos to fix it. Lately, we've noticed an uptick in platform providers coming to us for help pulling off the blindfold. Regardless of their industry or size, they all say the same thing: they need to understand per-submerchant costs, revenue, risk, and margin, and their PSP dashboards just aren't cutting it.

If you run a platform that enables payments for your merchants, your primary business is the platform and payments are just secondary infrastructure. But while payments might not be your core competency, they are a meaningful source of margin; you negotiate processing rates with your PSP, mark them up, and pass that cost to merchants as a part of what they pay to use your platform. The delta between what you pay to process and what you charge is your margin.

It seems simple enough, but that profit can quickly disappear when penalties, carding attacks, and quiet outages start to pile up.

Your PSP Shows Their View. Pagos Shows Yours.

Your PSP gives you an aggregate view of your overall cost of payment processing with one consolidated bill covering your entire portfolio of submerchants. That aggregate data hides a lot of sins and opportunities. When something goes wrong or a submerchant asks for better pricing, you have no way of knowing what’s actually driving the numbers at the individual submerchant level.

When you work with Pagos, we ingest all your payments data from your entire platform, clean and aggregate it, and present it back to you within your Pagos account. Using internal hierarchies, we then make your Pagos account mirror your existing portfolio structure exactly, allowing you to review data for either your entire platform or for just a single submerchant. With a couple clicks, you can instantly scope costs, approval rates, chargeback trends, and decline patterns to exactly the slice of your portfolio you care about, without having to manually filter to the same set of MIDs every time.

You can also give each of your submerchants their own Pagos credentials, so they can log in and monitor their own payments data; same platform, same dashboards, just scoped to their piece of the portfolio (and no one else’s)! By providing your users with this level of payment intelligence through Pagos, you get differentiation and stickiness without adding engineering overhead.

Maximizing Margin

The most obvious benefit of per-submerchant payments data visibility is the ability to optimize per-submerchant margin. Say a higher-volume submerchant comes to you asking for a better deal on processing fees. You know your average cost-per-submerchant across your entire portfolio, but you have no way of identifying the actual cost of processing that submerchant’s payments specifically. For example:

  • What are their approval, chargeback, and refund rates?

  • What is their payment method mix?

  • Do they process domestically or cross-border?

  • How often do they retry transactions and are they doing it efficiently?

  • What’s their fraud rate versus the portfolio average?

  • What is their effective rate and how does it compare to that of other submerchants?

All of these questions inform the individual processing costs for your haggling submerchant. Only by answering them can you decide exactly how low you’re willing to price their processing while preserving your margin.

Catching Problems Before They Become Your Problem

As a platform, you’re responsible for what happens to any of your submerchants. A carding attack on one (and the resulting chargeback spike) can threaten your VAMP ratio and your PSP relationship before you’ve even registered that something went wrong. Chargeback ratios, fraud rates, and dispute volumes from each of your submerchants all roll up to you, meaning one bad actor or one undetected fraud pattern can affect your reputation even if the rest of your book is clean.

Most platforms don’t catch these issues until month-end reconciliation or via merchant complaint, and by then, the damage is done. Pagos AI monitors your portfolio in near real-time and surfaces anomalies the next day via Alerts. Identify chargeback spikes, decline pattern shifts, new fee patterns, and BIN-level irregularities in the moment, all scoped to the specific submerchant where the issue is happening. We’ll contact you in the Pagos platform, over Slack, or via email, so you can take action before a localized problem becomes a portfolio-wide one.

Payments Intelligence as a Merchant Benefit

The platforms that win long-term go beyond providing basic payments infrastructure to offering real payments intelligence. With Pagos, you can go beyond submerchant visibility and give your merchants access to the tools that actually move the needle on their payments performance:

  • Complete Data Visibility: In Pagos Insights, submerchants can monitor approval rates, cost trends, decline patterns, and so much more.

  • Pagos AI: You and your submerchants can chat with Pagos AI in the Pagos platform or your preferred agent (via the Pagos MCP server) to uncover actionable opportunities within historical payments data, all without a dedicated payments analyst on staff.

  • Account Updater: Submerchants with vaulted payment credentials can automatically refresh stale card credentials across your PSPs and for all four major networks to reduce declines driven by outdated payment data.

  • Network Tokens: Help submerchants improve their authorization rates, reduce interchange costs, and protect against fraud with PSP-agnostic network token provisioning across all four major networks.

You can embed Pagos as the analytics and services layer underneath the payments experience you deliver to your merchants. Account Updater and Network Tokens are available as separate Pagos products alongside Pagos Insights and Pagos AI, so you can pick exactly what your platform needs. Get started with Pagos today!
